Bio

The French-Bulgarian artist Christian Bakalov lives and and works part time in Brussels and Sofia and has been seen as a performer in the work of Ivo Dimchev, Jan Fabre, Miet Warlop and Jérôme Bel, among others. In 2014 he created his first immersive installation BRIGHT, in which the audience plays the most important role. Blurring the boundaries between performative action and installation, Bakalov develops a series of immersive methods to introduce the audience into a parallel universe by addressing them one-on-one through different sensorial experiences. With PURE (2017) and ETERNAL (2020), Bakalov is currently completing his trilogy, ETERNIA , inspired by and drawing upon the immersive, sensory experience crucial in all three stages of Spinoza's concept of 'Eternity'. At the basis lies mankind’s connection with the surrounding things.

Current Projects

PURE

PURE is an immersive performative installation that investigates the influence of imagination and narratives on our perception of reality and their impact on the relations that compose « Me » and the « others things » . Guided on a parcours made of permanent situations and latent visual compositions, the audience activates these living images simply by incorporating their physical presence into it . With each personal background and history coming into play, visitors are invited to explore the various ways by which we design our reality, ranging from how we choose to construct an image, to our more unconscious hopes, fears or desires. Swaying between visual arts and performance, PURE generates interactions between bodies and objects and creates situations in which the audience, the performers and the installations have equal function into a common art object. PURE is the second part of the trilogy ETERNIA, in which Bakalov uses Spinoza's concept of infinity to explore themes such as life and death. Previously PURE toured extensively worldwide at a.o. Venice Biennial, Kaaitheater, Centre Pompidou, ACT Festival, Directorfest New York and will tour in Latin America and the Asia Pacific region later in 2020.

The problem with manual solutions is that they become harder to manage as you add more people, and thus more stress, to the system. “When you get to 30 or 40 people, that manual process started to grow from two hours, to three hours, four hours, five hours,” says Stephanie, adding, “It quickly became unscalable.”

Eternal

ETERNAL  is a collective ritual that gauges the essence of human condition through an experience of heightened intimacy and inescapable intensity . Оperating by dint of sensorial collisions between  visual and body matter , in which the audience and the performers has their roles and responsibility, this journey into each personal imagination  propose an unique esthetical and dramaturgical approach to live performance.  The immersive performative installation is the third and last part of the trilogy ETERNIA ( BRIGHT/PURE/ETERNAL)  , inspired and developed from Spinoza’s concept of  « ETERNITY ».
